Microbial evolution in natural habitats

Nature displays the most complex, but also the most typical environment in which bacteria reside. How do bacteria evolve in natural habitats? How do adaptation and diversification proceed? What happens on the way from a single genotype to diverged evolutionary lineages that may culminate in different species? In order to approach the above questions, I utilize a natural evolutionary laboratory, the “Evolution Canyon”.
